Stowmarket Town headed three points clear at the top of Division 1 by recording their 4th win in 5 games with a thumping 4-1 victory at Whitton United last night. The contest began with both sides counterattacking with pace and power; each trying their best to outshine the other, but it was the Gold & Black of Stow who struck first and what a strike it was. Neat play from the back with a telling ball into Robert CANFER, his pass to striker Wayne PROCTOR was inch perfect and the ex-Walsham man hit an audacious 30 yard lob over the back-peddling MOYES. Whitton responded well and a smart move down the right, their key play for first 45, was worked into the middle for Sam BANYA whose shot was brilliantly saved by BUGG low to his left. 0-1 at half time. The start of the next 45, Stow picked up where they left off when just 5 minutes in a combination of play from McCONNELL, TREDRAY and GRAHAM opened up the midfield and with time on his side, GRAHAM threaded a slide rule pass through the Whitton back line into the path of BROWN who riffled home to make it two, nil. Now in full flow, DRUMMOND switched play to TREDRAY who laid the ball to GRAHAM and again he found the nippy PROCTOR who showed bravery as well as skill to lift the ball over the advancing MOYES on 57. Changes from Whitton and with Stow moving deeper into their own half, gave the home side some hope and on 72 minutes they were awarded a penalty. INGLES stepped up and but blasted it against the crossbar. Whitton finally found the net but it was too little too late as Stow completed the win with a superb goal which touched most of their team before WAKE, on for PROCTOR, held the ball and laid it to the marauding MYHILL, 4-1 and the heady heights of league leaders for STFC for the first time since their relegation in 2005.
